Barclays has been the main sponsor of the awards since they started in 2017 and saw a significant benefit to their brand from such a high-profile, well-run awards programme.

Darren Isted edits the biz4Biz digital magazine portfolio. He highlighted the power of digital magazines with engaging content sent directly to a subscriber’s inbox – biz4Biz has a current reach of 500K readers. Our current range of magazines includes:

Biz4Biz Insight – first published in 2014

Sustainability Biz – first published in 2022

Manufacturing Biz – to be published in 2023

Ian Taylor introduced the biz4Biz Let’s Work Together digital marketing package, which comprises a range of services to promote a company’s brand, products, services, and people. The services on offer include magazine editorials and advertisements, email blasts, blog post promotion, social media support and much more.<

Gareth Hawkins introduced the biz4Biz Business Angels investor scheme. An angel investor invests money in a small business in exchange for a minority stake. Angel investors tend to be entrepreneurs or people with extensive experience in the business world. The Business Angels scheme is suitable for small start-up businesses looking for seed capital and people looking to invest in small businesses.

Dr Katherine Bean demonstrated the new Biz Directory – companies can register for free and create a basic listing to promote their businesses, products and services and record and publish their carbon footprint. Additional chargeable services allow for other content, such as videos, and more opportunities to promote a company via adverts.

Being compared with only part of a salad was a little unfair on Liz Truss our shortest serving Prime Minister. As reality emerges from the Covid nightmare and the post Brexit light is cast across the United Kingdom, we appear less United than we once were as the stark reality of low productivity, the effect of quantitative easing and seizing control of our own destiny, casts a shadow upon the direction we take next.

Whilst Lord King a former Bank of England Governor has stated that all major central banks have been slow in raising interest rates, the Fed have led the way in creating a US dollar strength to the detriment of Sterling and the cost of imports are rising with a corresponding impact on inflation, creating the cost of living squeeze we now experience. The current level of inflation set at 10.1% almost 5 times the target required of the Bank of England. This virtuous circle of events does not create the best environment to boost productivity and grow the economy as the missing link remains the incentive to do so which is still broadly lacking.

“We set out a vision for a low-tax, high-growth economy,” said Liz Truss, in her resignation speech. “I recognise, though, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party”.

It was a brave attempt by LT and KK to address this aspect and as you will see from the graph below, UK average mortgage rates were rising long before the now historic “fiscal statement”.

When you remove the reliance on gold reserves to support the value of your currency and allow all major currencies to float freely on their own printing press, you merely create an economy which is at the beck and call of its major creditors and sadly these same creditors are truly out of touch with the needs of the local economy and are merely margin managers of the UK PLC balance sheet which currently projects a less appealing outcome. Add to this a desire to remove the stress, related to energy cost manipulation to our households by you know who, and the balance sheet looks even less inspiring. Hence why the “fiscal statement” provided the opportunity for the worlds opinion to focus on what appeared to be poor management of the economy in the hands of a new Prime Minister and her Chancellor.

So, what happens next. We now have the “eat out to help out” Chancellor in post as Prime Minister and we have witnessed the virtually entire erasure of the fiscal statement with Jeremy Hunt as the current Chancellor promising a tightening of public spending or “CUTS” for short. This revelation appears to have had no significant effect on the bond and long-term interest rate markets whatsoever other than to stabilise them. This attitude will almost certainly act as an impediment to the grow, grow, grow stance a direction that the economy has most certainly got to take now.

Gone are the Corporation Tax and Higher Rate Taxpayers rate reductions sending a message once more to the wealth creators that your time is not now. As with all Governments spending, this will continue at pace and the business community are expected to deliver on Government excesses.

Against this uninspiring outlook the hatches will be battened as we await the storm on the horizon.

Some will say that the recent fiscal statement was nothing more than an ill conceived and rushed attempt at exciting the electorate and it must be said that it all appeared very much like a fire sale delivered by the Chancellor in just under 30 minutes. However, there is no doubt that Kwasi Kwarteng is an exceptionally bright young man and in truth there was nothing unexpected when you read the book he co-authored with Liz Truss, Dominic Raab, Priti Patel, and Chris Skidmore which was released in 2012 titled “Britannia Unchained”.

The text sets out their vision for the United Kingdom’s future as a leading player in the global economy, arguing that Britain needs to adopt a far-reaching form of free market economics, with fewer employment laws and suggesting the United Kingdom should learn lessons from the business and economic practices of other countries, including Canada, Australia and the tiger economies of the Far East like Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

This fiscal statement re-established the entrepreneurial landscape of the UK electing to encourage aspiration and was a blatant attempt to boost productivity and the GDP of the UK. It’s delivery on the morning of the 23rd of September 2022 was met with a grimace from the money markets with a 3.5% reduction of the pound versus the US dollar and placing pressure on the Bank of England to further hike interest rates to reduce inflation.

It marked a clear departure with the staid and unexciting economics and politics of the past and sets out a clear intention that the UK will maintain and improve its position in the world by being a major exporter and home to financial markets worldwide. The intended drop in the value of the pound moves Sterling closer to parity with other major currencies. It removes the benefit of a strong currency related to imports and creates a hugely competitive currency for exports. Governments have for certainly the past 30 years, singly benefited from the rise in Asian productivity and their desire for international inclusivity which with their low production costs have controlled the march of inflation but has forced our nation of shopkeepers to focus on overseas supply routes and less on the home-grown variety. In fact, I was staggered to hear Labours, Stella Creasey MP, argue in favour of European supply networks when quite simply our membership of the EU this past 43 years has simply stolen employment opportunities from the working man.

Brexit and concerns related to manufacturing control and security linked to China are the game changers in what is fast becoming a nationalist world. The support for Bankers was also clearly calculated. Removal of Prime Ministers aside, our nation is a glowing example of democracy at work and a safe haven for investment and it is better to have Banks and Bankers domiciled in the UK enjoying the relative security of a safe environment for investors. You would want as many as possible considering the sound investment opportunity that the UK represents as the country post Brexit, sets sale on a new nationalist manufacturing tide.

The cost-of-living crisis has clearly been addressed with the energy cap announcement and a weak sterling exchange rate will unquestionably impact import prices which will impact food and clothing costs and filter through to an unfavourable impact on wage packets. But we must not forget the 1.3 million jobs on offer by businesses, for the first time higher than the level of unemployment set against the number of welfare claimants and the need to encourage employment over welfare. Equally grotesque is the way in which the desire by the UK government to support civilians in this way was used by a Chinese Ambassador to justify their treatment of the Uighur people in China. I am sure that it is now desired that a growing, vibrant, low tax economy, would serve to encourage people into work and reduce the cost of welfare to the country.

It’s also important to recognise that Prime Minister Cameron created the opportunity for a Nationalist UK mindset by opening the doors to Brexit, Prime Minister Johnson in the eyes of the electorate got that job done and it is hoped that Prime Minister Truss will unleash the potential that our own destiny in the World now provides. Crazy fiscal statement or considered economic judgement, history will always be the judge of that, but just as Keynesian Economics has made its way through the politics of the past Kwasinomics could equally be seen as responsible for setting this country on a new road to our future.

As individuals and businesses become increasingly aware of the conversations being had about sustainability and the environment, many are considering how they can make greener choices.

One subject that we recurrently find ourselves engaging with employers and directors about, given the Government’s commitment to ban all sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, is switching to electric vehicles (EVs) and the tax implications of doing so.

Incorporating EVs into your business

Employers often opt to offer EVs to their workforce via a salary sacrifice arrangement. In principle, the employee pays for a particular benefit (in this case, an EV) by sacrificing a slice of their salary. Provided in this way, EVs are considered a Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) but do attract a preferential rate of tax.

Unsurprisingly, lower CO2 emissions result in more significant tax savings.
The tax charge for solely electric cars is currently 1% for the 2021/22 tax year and will go up to 2% for the 2022/23 tax year. Compared to the 14% that vehicles emitting 1-50 CO2 (g/km), with an electric mileage range of <30, will pay in 2022/23, you can appreciate that 2% piques interest.

When considering EVs, it may also be worth getting to grips with the optional remuneration rules, and how these may or may not impact you.

Other tax implications and practical considerations

If you are thinking about replacing your own petrol or diesel vehicle, or those within your business, with an EV/s, it’s worth bearing in mind the following points:

You cannot claim VAT back on vehicles purchased by your company, unless 100% business usage can be proven. However, 50% of the VAT on leasing payments can be claimed back, even in cases where the vehicle is not used solely for business purposes.

The electricity consumed to charge an EV, if provided to an employee at no cost via a point at or near the workplace, is not considered a taxable benefit.

New and unused pure zero-emission cars and vans qualify for 100% first year allowance (FYA), in respect of capital allowances, with no upper constraint on value. Furthermore, the temporary ‘super-deduction’ affords for a 130% FYA on qualifying electric charging points, used within the business for EVs, until March 2023.

As of December 2021, the Government’s Plug-in Car Grant, which will be available until 2023 and should be applied for automatically by the car dealership in question, provides a £1,500 contribution towards pure EVs priced under £32,000.

Obviously, all of the tax advantages do not take account of the fact that it’s an electric vehicle and may have some limitations; for example, the vehicles range, time taken to charge, and the availability and installation of charging points are all important considerations. From discussions that we have had, we also know that cost and availability of vehicles are two significant drawbacks, presently.

Planning a purchase?

We understand the extent to which tax is an integral consideration when it comes to having control of your business and being able to plan proactively and effectively.

We can help you to dissect the implications of purchasing EVs, whether for yourself as a director or for your wider workforce, and of operating salary sacrifice schemes in relation to cars or other benefits.

On the 21st of June 2021, I wrote my editorial “will we face redundancies or resignations” which you can read here: https://biz4biz.org/will-we-face-redundancies-or-resignations-with-the-removal-of-furlough/

Since this article, much of what I predicted has come to pass and as expected a major recession is now on the horizon with inflation exceeding the official level of 11 per cent and is probably closer to 20 per cent in the real world.

We have all heard about the energy crisis and the impact of the war in Ukraine on gas pricing. The truth is that successive governments over the past 25 years have all failed to take effective action in delivering our infrastructure for energy, believing that the long grass is the best place for any decision. Scared to consider nuclear, following Chernobyl and Fukushima melt downs and concerned about fossil fuel impact on the climate the best decision to make, was no decision at all and here we are facing the worst of all worlds in energy independency terms.

Simply announcing a desire to build eight nuclear power stations may be an excellent step in at least “a” direction. None of us want to spend our evenings sat in the dark as we did in the 1970’s or be unable to heat our homes or cook food. This is a basic need that we all have, and Governments are responsible for providing this support to the very fabric of our lives, but how?

We are reliant on either Chinese, French or American technology to build nuclear power stations and we hear that Rolls Royce might also have the technological know-how. I am sure you have an opinion on which one you would support. But here we are with various businesses experiencing major staff shortages and where is the labour coming from to build such projects?

The pandemic has forced many to consider their quality of life and the state created the right strategy in supporting businesses at the appropriate time but many older workers unhappy with the early mornings and the late evenings way of life, started to experience the importance of “time” versus “work”. Many employees embraced the home working options the pandemic provided and many now see this as the only way that their employment will be structured in the future. This as I predicted last year has placed employers under pressure to consider change and has likely encouraged manual workers who were unable to take advantage of home working to consider new careers that can.

We have in the UK a rich tapestry of different people from various backgrounds that make our society equally rich in capability and unfortunately the Blair government particularly with their mantra that everyone should go to university, has demonstrated a basic misconception that every form of employment requires someone with a degree. It’s great today to see that Universities are now offering Degree Apprenticeships which firstly mean students are freed from Student loans and secondly enables the qualifications provided to harmonise with the employer’s needs. But what about the Vocational Skills required? I have written about the unfairness of Maths and English GCSE’s preventing apprenticeships here https://biz4biz.org/is-it-schools-or-the-system-of-qualification-failing-our-children/ and I am delighted to see the announcement by the Skills Minister Alex Burghart that this has now been taken into account where he states

“We are changing English and Maths requirements for those Level 2 apprentices who start with the lowest level of prior attainment in English and Maths. People who start a L2 apprenticeship without L1 English and Maths will no longer need to automatically attempt L2 English and Maths tests to complete their apprenticeship. It will mean that thousands of L2 apprentices can focus on securing a L1 English and Maths qualification with only those who are ready to take the Level 2 tests attempting them.”

This is truly a bold step in exactly the right direction to engage more people in Apprenticeships, but what are we able to deliver in our Schools and Colleges that would make a fundamental difference to the skills base that we need, following the decisions made by workers leaving their roles, post pandemic. Personally, I believe we should start by attracting the Skilled operative that has decided to retire early and encourage them into our classrooms to help train those that are starting out. The Skilled technician still has a role in training others, and we need a scheme to attract these people into the training workplace. We already have the courses available to help them understand the teaching process, but we need incentives to capture their skills for the greater good.

We also need a very clear understanding of the actual skills required across the country where there will be a serious shortage and a clear programme of resupplying the workforce with these skills such that we do not experience a prolonged shortage. I feel that we will need to see the re-emergence of Skills Training Centres across the regions to make further inroads into these. We also require a recognition by government that the cost of provision of vocational skills is often 2 to 3 times greater than a classroom-based qualification, so that Colleges are encouraged to promote these courses and recover the cost for doing so.

We have the opportunity with Ministers willing to recognise change and we have the perfect narrative around the concept of “Levelling Up”. Now is the time to make a difference.

As I inferred in my piece regarding “Redundancies or Resignations” which can be seen here https://biz4biz.org/will-we-face-redundancies-or-resignations-with-the-removal-of-furlough/ demands will be made upon business to support various increased costs of the Covid fallout. It is clear that the profligacy from quantitative easing is over and government will now find new ways to raise funds as demonstrated by the recent 2.5% increase in National Insurance (1.25% Employee and 1.25% Employer). It’s an inevitability of the costs created in fighting Covid, but some would argue is further proof of how little thought Government has for the process of running a business.

Businesses do not have a vote in General Elections but are required to foot the bill for pretty much all our governments spending. Covid support mechanisms like Furlough schemes are hugely supportive of the Electorate, individuals who get the opportunity to vote have maintained their employment, whilst business activities have been greatly reduced.

Unfortunately, this government is creating the wrong impression almost every time the Prime Minister speaks. Activities like the NI tax increase are not temporary and will exist forever and are in fact a direct tax on employment. It’s just one of many taxes imposed like, insurance tax, increased several times since inception, VAT -ditto only ever increasing, the Apprenticeship Levy which has a use by date and corporation tax increasing significantly from 2023. It all sounds like “Oliver Twist” no not “please sir can I have some more” but more like “gotta pick a pocket or two.”

The issue is how much more cost will sneak up on business and remain fixed forever? Each additional cost whilst increasing the spending power of government, increases the disincentive of starting or owning a business, creating a strong economy, and maximising employment and reducing Welfare and unemployment costs.

For some months now there has been an inference that Government will disconnect their relationship with LEP’s the only apolitical, business facing, local government group, responsible for the provision of Growth Hubs, Inward investment and Tourist Hubs, Enterprise Zones and Innovation and Skills investments, this past 10 years.

Clearly Government is saying to Businesses give us your money, but we do not want to hear your opinion! Just be careful how distanced you appear from your major benefactors; you might be accused of being out of touch which would be a real shame!

There is so much more that Government can do to maximise its income from Businesses without increasing taxes and they need to start looking at these innovative options now.

The vision for the new campus has been developed in partnership with Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC), the UK Government, Stevenage Borough Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and would build on the existing presence of GSK, the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult and the SBC on the site.

As part of proposals set out today, GSK is looking to sell the 33 acres of land, with an aim to subsequently unlock up to £400 million in new investment from a private sector developer to build the new campus and potentially create up to 5,000 highly-skilled jobs, over the next five to ten years. The company expects to select a development partner later this year, with a view for work to begin on master planning for the new campus in 2022.

Tony Wood, Senior Vice President, Medicinal Science & Technology, GSK said: “The past 18 months has shown the UK life sciences sector at its best and the UK has recently unveiled an ambitious 10-year vision for the UK life sciences sector. Our goal is for Stevenage to emerge as a top destination for medical and scientific research by the end of the decade. We are excited to find a development partner to realise our vision to foster the next generation of world-class scientists and biotechnology firms in Britain.”

If successful, the new campus could attract several world-class research organisations to Stevenage, creating exciting opportunities for collaboration in a state of the art, life science ecosystem. The highly-successful Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult and Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst are both already on the site and have attracted a number of successful start-ups which collectively have raised around £1.6 billion of funding. These organisations were set up with a mixture of public and private sector support – including from GSK – and are both involved in the plans which should enable their expansion.

Dr Sally Ann Forsyth OBE, Chief Executive Officer, Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst said: “Stevenage is already a leading location for life science companies to develop and commercialise cutting edge therapeutics. Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst is home to over 40 companies, and today’s proposal presents exciting opportunities to build on this by supporting their growth, attracting new organisations to the ecosystem and facilitating further collaboration with world-class organisations. We look forward to working with GSK and other partners to further develop the thriving life sciences campus in Stevenage.”

The new campus – which would sit next to GSK’s existing site at Stevenage – could ultimately deliver 100,000 square metres of new floorspace for commercial life sciences research and development.

As one of its two global R&D hubs, Stevenage is a key location for GSK, employing world-class scientists and driving cutting-edge innovation. It is already the UK’s largest cell and gene therapy cluster, the third largest globally and includes GSK R&D activities in the field. The plan is expected to build on these strengths.

Councillor Sharon Taylor OBE, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council said: “I am deeply proud that Stevenage is home to a world-leading life science cluster and welcome plans for a new life sciences campus. This will cement our standing as a leading STEM location within the UK. As we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is vital that we create new, quality jobs and opportunities for our town and our country. Our shared commitment is to make Stevenage even better, working with businesses, residents, community groups and partners to help regenerate the town and create many new jobs and opportunities for local people. We look forward to continuing our work with the life sciences sector to make Stevenage a leading light in the discovery and development of the medicines of the future.”

Mark Bretton, Chair, Hertfordshire LEP and Chair, LEP Network, said: “Our investment in the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult and Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst has consolidated Stevenage’s position as a globally recognised hub for cell and gene therapy, attracting international companies with the potential to create thousands of high-level jobs. Hertfordshire LEP played a pivotal role in securing Stevenage’s Life Sciences Opportunity Zone and High Potential Opportunities recognition. This exciting new development will be a key component of our Cell & Gene Cluster Plan, ensuring continued growth and investment for the area.”

Adrian Hawkins OBE, the independent Chair of the Stevenage Development Board said: “Our highly successful Towns Fund bid fully recognises the importance of the STEM sector organisations based in Stevenage and how they can provide an excellent opportunity, to level up and secure long term social mobility for local people within Stevenage and the broader North Herts area. The Hertfordshire LEP and County Council, have regularly worked with both central Government and the Stevenage Borough Council to facilitate the delivery of both the Catalyst and the Catapult within the GSK Stevenage site and this announcement of an additional space allocation, will bring many more successful start-ups to Stevenage and enable the scale-up of companies already based in the Town. This development cannot fail to further enhance Skill levels locally and provide the opportunity for all our residents to achieve beneficial employment, at the same time as an exciting career in the Life Science and Advanced Engineering sectors.

GSK’s existing R&D operations at Stevenage are un-affected by the development plans announced today, which will also require the expansion of the public road gyratory to improve access to the site.

In terms of long-term employment and a lifetime of success, the right skills can make all the difference!

Proud to be born in the UK’s first new town, I have had first-hand experience of witnessing what was a post war paradigm of urbanisation from scratch. A Government experiment in creating a “land fit for heroes” and providing opportunity and homes to those willing to relocate, Stevenage will reach the grand old age of 75 years in 2022 and will still be upright and bright despite her age and attitude, born in a different era where centralised retail and bus journeys were a joy to behold at a time of very low car and home ownership.

Following my appointment as Chairman, the Stevenage Development Board received a £37.5 million government Towns Fund grant in March 2021, from our successful bid to change the future dynamic of Stevenage which you can see here. We start in Stevenage with the real benefit of Airbus building 25% of the world’s satellites now in orbit around the world; the largest Cell and Gene therapy cluster outside of the USA; and the largest construction project outside of the channel tunnel being established by GSK.

The government has already invested £120 million in the Bioscience Park and Catapult; fully supported by the Hertfordshire LEP. In my past capacity as Deputy Chair of the Hertfordshire LEP and current Chair of the LEP’s Skills and Employment Board, I have had the real opportunity to examine the performance of the towns in Hertfordshire mapped against both Employment Opportunity and Skills Delivery, and to identify the following interesting facts:

Employment – we are very fortunate to have on the Stevenage Development Board representatives from active Stevenage-based organisations such as MBDA, AIRBUS, GSK, Stevenage Bioscience, the Cell and Gene Catapult, the Wine Society, Herts LEP, the North Herts College and University of Hertfordshire, WENTA, Consumer Advice, the Hertfordshire LEP, Stevenage Borough Council and Herts County Council – each providing, in their own way, real career opportunities and relatively high salaries. In fact, during Covid, Stevenage had the lowest furlough rate amongst Herts based employers. Residents however endure lower rates of pay than the average pay scale delivered by Stevenage employers and consequently this infers that many Stevenage residents are leaving the Town each day, joining the traffic on the A1M to venture away from Stevenage for employment. In the age of Climate change this is not beneficial to us all.

Skills – many parties included in the delivery of education and skills have mentioned that there is little aspiration amongst the residents of North Herts to develop their skills above a level 2, yet local employers are seeking skills of level 3 and above to support their organisations and are encouraging workers to travel to Stevenage from all over Hertfordshire and beyond, exacerbating air pollution and climate change issues further. The issue therefore is how do we inspire residents to see the real employment opportunities in Stevenage and engage with the plethora of top-quality STEM employers on their doorstep?

The Opportunity – Working with Airbus and their Mars Rover facility, we have been extremely fortunate in securing a £1.5 million grant from the Hertfordshire LEP to create the STEM Discovery Centre in Stevenage https://stemdiscoverycentre.co.uk and have so far entertained 14,000 school children with the delights of space technology, who have visited the centre in the three years leading up to the Covid pandemic to marvel at the Mars Rover and mock lunar surface. We now want to extend this to the advanced engineering, life sciences, cell and gene therapy sciences now actively being developed and delivered in Stevenage. We hope to encourage residents of the Town to visit this facility and encourage their children to aspire to a career in the STEM sectors locally.

With the Towns Fund allocation now agreed, we have set aside £5 million for a new STEM training facility : the “Stevenage Innovation and Technology Centre”, or SITECH, to train residents of North Herts into careers with local employers and more recently our University and FE college organisations have reached the last group stage in a bid for an Institute of Technology which will deliver qualifications at levels 3, 4 and 5 with the support of our major local, world leading organisations. With their help, we hopefully will convince Government that Hertfordshire is the right place for an Institute of Technology and win this bid to deliver an even broader range of qualifications and opportunities.

There has never been a better time to seriously consider improving your skills whatever age you are. The Covid pandemic has focussed all our minds on survival and what the future holds and it’s time to think how we can develop our prospects. The Government is set on boosting the Nations skills with a lifetime skills guarantee and whilst they have supported our homesteads with the furlough arrangements during Covid, we need to think how life might have been different if only we had been incentivised to use this time for training and development.
Add to this the opportunities that will abound post Brexit as the country changes its modus operandi to take on the supply to further countries worldwide who delight at British made goods – the products of a trusted democracy – there is a realistic chance of significantly improving your life chances and those of your family.

The world of education and skills delivery is becoming ever more interesting with the arrival of augmented reality and the availability at home of a faster range of tablets and PCs. Covid distancing has hastened the arrival and delivery of online learning by institutions, forced to find other ways to reach their students during the pandemic, which makes the world of learning and skills development more convenient without the usual availability and time constraints.

Now is the time to identify the rising stars in industry running world-class businesses close to home that can provide real career prospects in newly defined fast-growing markets and make a choice as to how your skills could develop. Alternatively, the company that currently provides your employment will have likely proven their commitment to you during the pandemic and will probably want to boost their future by investing in skills development of their own staff – so it could be a great time for that discussion with your current employer.

Remember in terms of long-term employment and a lifetime of success, the right skills can make all the difference!
